on priorities and au pairs

She was organizing the to-dos for the day, when she asked, “Is there anything that you need to get today?”

He, with eagerness that assumes the answer will be ‘yes’, said, “An au pair!”

She, with a schoolmarm attitude looks over her glasses and says, “For your inner child?”

He, with mock innocence says, “Well, it doesn’t hurt to ask.”

She, with a dismissive sigh says, “If you don’t ask, you don’t get. Nice try.”

He, with honest dejection says, “I never get what I ask for.”
